Interests: With this new character I'd like to delve into how someone with a very removed background would interact with others of this world. Kattrin has lived her whole life with the Avvar people until this point and it will be fun to play a character having to learn to lead a new sort of life and how she will handle the different ways magic is treated.

History

Kattrin was born to a clan among the Avvar people. Her mother was the thane since her father died before she was born. She lived among them and enjoyed her time here. They were peaceful times and when she developed her magic, she was taken in as an apprentice to learn to control her abilities. The Augur was pleased with her progress and felt she would make for a good Augur herself one day due to her strong connection with nature. Some training for this had begun when a man from another clan approached to ask for her hand.

It was granted by her mother and the Augur even though Kattrin had no desire to be with him. Something in her told her this was not a good idea. Still, the Augur felt she could learn much from the one of the other clan and her mother believed that it would be a good way to ensure that the other clan had a continuation of strong magic in their blood. In the end, it was agreed upon and he managed to take her in the night.

Though she used a short him and tied the knots of the rope tight, he undid five to ensure five years of marriage. Things went downhill from there. He was not a kind man and was aggressive towards her. Her duty to her vow kept her with him. For two years.

One night the aggression led to her back landing on a fire and she watched the winds blow a healing herb away from her that night. Believing it to be a sign, she packed up what she could and ran. The guilt was strong for not keeping her word but she couldn't ignore what she felt to be the gods telling her to depart. Of course this meant that she likely would never be welcome among her people again and she proclaimed herself in exile.

Treating the wounds she had, she took to living off the mountains and fending for herself until she watched from a distance as people of the Inquisition dealt with a rift. It was that day she found a little fennec who was wounded. As she cared for the creature and it grew stronger it started to head off in one direction before coming back to her like it was guiding her and she took this as a new sign from the gods for what her purpose was to be. Perhaps she couldn't be sure since she was no Augur herself but she could at least try to assume this was what they desired of her.

So she arrived in Kirkwall to join the Inquisition, back scarred with burns that she kept covered, and a desire to help this organization on what she felt to be a holy quest. Unsure if this was safe for her or not she knew she had no where else to go. She was Kattrin the Exile now.

Personality

Kattrin is one with a more quiet nature to her. It allows her to listen and learn about the world around her as well as take in what problems are for those that are hurt. Not only that but she feels that she is closer to her gods this way, able to notice when they give her signs. The clan she was born to would tease her for how quiet she could be and she would offer them a smile in return. It's not that she lacks communication skills because she enjoys good conversation. Rather it's just a greater appreciation for listening first to make sure she hears what is said rather than jumping to a conclusion.

And with that said, she is certainly one to take her time to understand before proceeding. It's rare for her to do something that might be considered rash and even then she only does so if she feels the spirits have guided her to such a thing. A strong example being when she left her clan to be an exile instead. Though she carries a guilt over leaving them and breaking her oath, she also moves forward because she feels this is the path the spirits have led her to walk. Even if that means she no longer has a home to return to.

As a way to get past the burden of guilt that she has, she throws herself into healing. She's always been a driven person, determined to finish a task that she begins, but she is perhaps more so now that this is a realm with which she feels to be her last ties to who she was.

Now, it's important to bring up the treatment she endured by her husband. Though it was abusive, she was never one to just allow the treatment. She stood up for herself (and others if arguments happened to be about other people). In the end his actions did lead to her falling into a fire that has scarred her back but she does not fault him for this nor does she blame herself. For that reason she doesn't fear pain nor hesitate at the possibility of being with others.

It does take some work to get to know her though and know her mind. Her people believe that something must be earned. Trust, friendship, knowledge, and so on. If someone wants to build a relationship of any kind with her, they're sure to find themselves on quests of sorts. For example, gather these herbs that are good for burns. When you return you'll hear a story about how she so intimately knows why they're good for burns.

Above all is her faith in her gods. They move her and even now she does all she can to honor them. Never try to suggest to her that what she believes in is wrong. She will defend her beliefs. Not out of anger though for she is not quick to such and prefers calm conversation.

Opinions & Affiliations

Kattrin's outlook on people outside the Avvar is rather cautious. Her people have kept to themselves so avoid things like the Chantry and Templars for a reason. She is a little more willing to give them a chance since she's lending her services to the Inquisition but as a whole she's not likely to trust quickly. A group making these people their allies doesn't mean they won't try to do something about the fact that she's a mage who has never been part of the Circle. Not only that but this is really her first time encountering the Templars since they were never allowed in the mountains. On the flip side of things she's more willing to be open to dwarves since they are the ones her people is the closest to. For the most part though she is likely to approach people with caution, not quite opening up right away since she will be uncertain of their feelings towards her even if she happens to mean well. This does mean she will sympathize more with mages and their freedom since that is something she has always had. With fellow Avvar she's likely to be more cautious, aware that she's now an exile and no longer considered one of them. She knows she might not be welcome around them as a result.

Basically the summary is that she's cautious but she wants to help so she'll give others a chance. And will not deny anyone assistance if she can provide it unless they have proven that she shouldn't have faith in them.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Healing: While among the Avvar, she took up a special interest in healing magic and herbs. She is very talented in the area and has put much effort into it. The spirit who trained her recognized this as well when teaching her magic and schooled her in ways to do accomplish this. Being one with great respect for the spirits she's able to fully utilize spirit healing, praying to her gods for their help with wounds. However, she has knowledge on plants for potions and treatment, having learned these before her magic developed.

Nature Knowledge: Being raised as she was, she learned much about the plants and animals of the world. What they could be used for, what they meant in this world. For that reason she has great knowledge of them and how various parts of them can be used so that life can continue and be respected as well. This also helps her with her rituals for her beliefs or with creating potions if needed.

Spirit Contact: Though no Augur, she did receive some training in contacting the spirits in the hopes she would become augur one day herself. For that reason she is familiar with some rituals for speaking with them as well as banishing them along with recognizing good from bad. This is not a skill she uses lightly for the spirits are not hers to do as she pleases. Doing so would be very disrespectful to them since she views them as her gods. Primarily she just brings them offerings and asks them for advice to see how they communicate to her through natural means. (A branch breaking on a tree as she sits near it for example.) This respect and good will towards the benevolent spirits aids her in her Spirit Healing.

Survival: From an early age she was taught to survive and to make use of the world around her to do so. Kattrin is thus able to set small traps to get small animals for food and can gather plants. She can also turn what is left behind of these (bones, furs, seeds, etc.) into other things so that no part ever goes to waste.

Cautious: Living among her former people taught her to have a cautious nature around many lowlanders. One never knows the intentions of a lowlander right away. She believes the Inquisition to have a holy purpose but still has some caution as far as the people within until they prove to her what their intentions are. After all she believes strongly in putting effort forth in order to gain things and that includes them gaining her trust.

Hedge Mage: Though her talents in magic are good, they also are nothing like what most would associate as a normal practice. This can lead some to find her ways odd or suspicious. Some might not be willing to trust what she can do as well since she's not able to learn Circle Magic anymore and can only continue her practices as she's been taught by the spirit she was once possessed with.

Lyrium: Because she has been taught a different way of doing magic, she can require large quantities of lyrium for stronger rituals. She finds this perfectly normal though and makes sure to have her bottles of lyrium on hand in case she requires them.

Exile: This is a self-imposed exile since she has made herself an oath-breaker but she knows that she cannot return to her people. This brings a lot of guilt since she is aware that her people had great expectations for her. It's likely there is now strife between the clan of her birth and the clan she married into as well. But it's too late for her to go back now and she feels strongly that this is the path the spirits wish her to take. So she's without contact with the Avvar people even though she obviously has intimate knowledge of their culture.

Avvar Knowledge: Being Avvar herself (even if she is in exile), she has vast knowledge of how their people work. Though she cannot speak as a representative of them, she can at least share her knowledge when she feels someone has earned that.

Minor Fighting Ability: By no means is she on the same level as an actual fighter. However, her survival skills have at least taught her how to defend herself enough to get away if nothing else. Plus that staff of hers can have one hell of a smack to it if all else fails. She did make it from a very strong root for a reason after all. Again though she is no fighter and is best paired with those skilled with weapons and such while she offers support. After all, she put far more focus on healing than elemental magics so she only knows a couple of those for combat. Something her spirit teacher encouraged. So in the end it's best if she's kept in the back of a fight making sure those around her are kept healed with her magic.

Good Will: In the end she has a strong desire to offer her aid. While she may push others to earn what she has to offer, she is not likely to immediately turn down someone coming to her for help. She has a very warm heart. With that said, this does not mean she is a pushover. She is not just going to let someone take advantage of her kindness. Ever.

Illiterate: Save for Avvar runes, she is completely illiterate. Her clan had some books from trades but they were not anything she felt the need to learn to read. In fact, she found it rather odd when there were those among her people who did want to learn to read and the rest of the clan felt the same. In this new world she must now live in though this could be quite the problem for her since so many around her will have this skill.

Singing: She's actually a rather gifted singer. She mainly just knows the hymns of her people but she is rather fond of music in general. Perhaps even learning some of the songs if she finds them entertaining.

Inventory

Her clothes
Her mage staff
Short knife
A pack with some essentials like food and lyrium and herbs
A tent she can fold into her pack
A fennec that follows her places (she views this as something of a guide and finds insult in anyone who suggest this to be her pet)

Motivation

Because she's abandoned her oath, she knows she is no longer welcome among her people. That leaves her with nowhere to go and she's left the mountains as a result. Through her travels she's seen signs of the Inquisition and that it is headed to Kirkwall. And so she has made her way there to offer her aid in what she believes to be a holy quest.

SAMPLES

Sample One

One day she'd simply shown up among the healers. It was clear that she was new but her knowledge was there and she was just working. No one was quite sure when this had all started anymore actually. It was just accepted that the Avvar woman was one of the healers. She certainly earned her fair share of odd looks but she seemed to just ignore them in favor of healing those that needed it. She had her own concerns about these lowlanders given their reputations with mages like herself but so far they'd proven willing to accept the help she offered.

Today she was murmuring softly as she looked over cut on a sleeping young man. She'd been treating it for several days now and it was finally showing signs of progress. He'd been uneasy about her using magic so she'd need to resort to herbs in order to build his trust. It was fair, of course. He didn't know her and she didn't know him. There was no way she would expect him to simply believe that she would not do anything unseemly to him with her Avvar magic.

He stirred and she looked up at his face. His eyes fluttered open and he saw her there. At first he jumped, surprised to see she was just there but he relaxed quickly enough when she offered a small smile and some water. Kattrin helped him to sit up then felt his cheek. “No fever. You will heal well now, lowlander.”

He gave a snort and she lifted a brow at him then sat back, letting herself rest on the ground rather than the nearby stool. Honestly she just didn't feel it to be sturdy enough and had no wish to give herself a splinter just for a rest. “It is true that you may scar on your face. However, I have known women to find these marks a sign of great strength. A sign of a warrior who survives.”

She watched him flush some and then he handed her the cup before murmuring something about having no interest in women. Her response was simply to shrug. “If the gods have guided you towards the male flesh then it is a good thing you have but a scar so you can better partake of them.”

He choked and she gave him another smile before getting up so she could see to her other patients. Yes, she received odd looks here and there but she was rather generally accepted now. If nothing else her smile was a welcome sight. Certainly enough to chase away those who wondered aloud at the sadness her face sometimes held. If they wanted answers to that then they would have to ask her rather than simply question when they felt she could not hear.

For that story was one that would take...some time to tell.

Sample Two

It was the nights that were the hardest for her since joining the Inquisition. During the day she could keep herself busy as a healer or by gathering food or herbs. But at night she was left to her own devices and that meant being left alone with her thoughts.

Her gods had guided her to this path. It was a fact that she knew well but it didn't so easily chase away the thoughts of her clan and what they would have to face now that they would surely have strife with her former clan. Her former mother was the thane of that former clan. She could see the look on disappointment on her face as she lifted her hand to touch the scars that stretched up to one shoulder on her back, a physical reminder that Kattrin Etedotten was truly gone and Kattrin the Exile born from the ashes.

The man who had once been her husband must have had such anger when he'd learned she'd fled. Some days she wondered if it would have made more sense to explain to him what the signs had been which had led to her deciding to leave. But it was too late to for that. These were the days of her needing to live with...

A noise to her right caught her attention. It was the little fennec she'd treated awhile ago, the one who still followed her now. She smiled warmly at the creature, resting her head on her knee to watch him eat the offering she'd left near the entrance of her tent. He liked to keep returning to her and she took comfort in that. To think that the spirits might have infused themselves with this little one in order to remind her that this was her path was good for her.

“So you visit this night as well, little one. You honor me by accepting the offering I left for you.” For that was what it was. An offering of food to the spirit she believed to live within this fennec. He looked up at her then lifted one of the pieces of food up carefully. Bringing it over, he set it near her hand then scampered off again. She watched him go then went to pick up the food. A tear slid down her cheek as she closed her eyes and murmured a prayer of thanks to her gods.

Yes. She was meant to be with this Inquisition. She was grateful for this reminder. There were times when she worried about her place here, if it was safe to be with these lowlanders when she couldn't be sure of all of their intentions or what they would make of her being an oath-breaker.

“Thank you...”
